We just finished our, hopefully, last test on excel. It was pretty easy, for the most part. I'm not absolutely sure if were finished with excel or not, but i sure enjoyed learning so much about excel. On Friday we didn't have class, because basically everyone went home at lunch. So our class will start again on the Monday we come back.
Have a Happy holiday, and Merry Christmas and Hanuka and anything else. (sorry i don't know much about the holidays :D )

Getting to know the Wiki.
Knowing what you are working with is very important. For example, you need to be familiar with all the programs Mr.Case shows us. That's why we have test, so that the teacher can see how much you know about your programs, and of course to torture us but anyways.
Today Mr.Case went over some basic things you should be familiar with on the school wiki. Like for example, how to keep your own online agenda that you can access anywhere in the world. Its easier than paper and pencil because you never know what can happen, you can misplace it or lose it. The Tiki is your own place. You can make your profile the way you want people to view it, have friends, contacts, send others email and so much more. The wiki, however, is a place for everyone in the class, and whoever has access to the wiki. Its where everyone can see what you are doing, and they can edit pages and so much more.
Wiki come from the Hawaiian word community.
And an F.Y.I Mr.Case pays much attention to the forums because it shows leadership and initiative, so that's one way of getting good marks!
That's all for now.
Peggy.

A WEIBULL is a . . . ?
Today in class we spent most our time reviewing for the test we're going to have on Wednesday on excel. This is a really big test so study hard for it. The best way to study is to just go into excel and play around with the different functions until you get the hang of them. But remember, there are always different ways of doing something, so try finding the different ways. Also, another way to get good marks is to, of course, listen to Mr.Case in class, because in between his explanations, he gives out little tips that are going to be or could be on the test.
Here are just some of the things that could be on the test. You need to know the basic formulas, like Sum, division, average, count etc. These are called functions. The difference between a function and a formula is that a formula is what you use to come up with the answer to a question. There could be many functions in a formula for example adding, subtracting and multiplying could be functions of a formula. <- * that could be a question on the test. * There are other tricks that Mr.Case pointed out to us like the OVR button on the bottom right hand corner of your page. You can double-click it or press the insert button and it will turn on. That makes your text overlap each other when you are typing and the word you wrote before will be erased and the new word will take its place.
Here's a trick question, that could just be a bonus question on the test: Whats a Weibull ?
Good luck on the test.!
Peggy.

sales parson ?!
Today in class we had a new assignment. We had to pretend like we are a salesperson. We opened excel and created a spreadsheet with the following items: Item number. Item name. Wholesaleprice. Retail price. Tax. Total.
We had to come up with 15 different things we wanted to sell and come up with a number for each column. Then we had to add it up and see how much we would get in total when we were selling our products with tax. Tax is 13%.
Then when your done, you have to go to a site and practise your skills in excel. There will be a test on it this week so study !!
Later days.

Are you breaking any laws ?
Today in class we learned a little about laws and regulations about copyright laws for podcasting. To be honest I don't know what its completely about because it was so long it made me tired just looking at it, but what it was basically about was about all the rules there are about making your own podcast. You need to be very careful when your making a podcast so that you don't break those rules because if you make the smallest mistake on your podcast and someone finds out, you can get sued so be careful! Also if you break one little rule and Mr.Case finds out, your going to have to do your podcast all over again!!
This article is about all the rules that need to be followed in order for you to not get sued. If you want to take images, songs, interviews, and pretty much anything, you have to be hundred percent sure that its not copyrighted or else the person can sue you. If you do happen to come across something you want and its copyrighted then you need to contact that person and ask for permission, and that requires a lot of work, so I think its better to just not use anything off the Internet. try making it yourself, it'll be original and that way, no one can sue you!
That's it for now.
See you.

Here comes the worst part of report cards. .
Getting the sad realization that you didn't do so well on your report card as you were hoping, is bad enough, but having to calculate your marks after it is even worse! You sit there and wonder how you can make up your marks for second and third term so you can reach your goals successfully. Well here's an easy way you can do that. Today we learned how to calculate our average for first term, what our goals are for third term and what grades we need to get to achieve our goal for term three. Excel is easy, if you know what you want to figure out. For example, today we learned to do things backwards. So we have an answer but we want to find out the question. Chose three columns, and at the top of each one write your term. (Term one, term two, term three.) Write your subjects in a column before your term one column. In that, going down, write all your subjects. Since you know all your subjects for term one, write them in. Now make a new column right after term three and in the heading write 'Goals'. In there, write all the marks you'd like to get for term three, and keep them realistic! Using a formula, you take the mark of your goals for the first subject [eg. F4 ] and multiply that by three. Subtract that from your term one mark and what ever you have left, divide it by two. And that will give you the mark you need for term two in order to achieve your goal. Now the great thing about excel is that once you've got a formula in one column, you can simply drag the number in your first row down and it will automatically calculate the marks you need for your other subjects. The easy thing about excel is that because you have used a formula, if you make a mistake or you want to change your marks, you can change one thing and excel automatically changes everything for you. After all that hard work, you want to check if your formula is correct, what you can do is make a dummy row at the bottom and drag your first number down (with the formula) because once you have a formula for one number, you can drag it and the formula will stay the same for everything else in that column. So drag it down, and if you get 100 in each row, you know you have done it right!
That's a lot to take in but once you get the hang of it, its pretty easy. So give it a shot and see what marks you need to get in order to achieve your goals!
Have fun !.

Tutorial. . .
Today in class, we got introduced to a new site. We have to go to http://movies.atomiclearning.com/k12/home and search for excel. Once we did that, we had to chose from a list of excel videos that people made. Each of them was a quick but helpful video on the different functions of excel.
We also had to ask our parents about out family budget on the weekend so that now we can make a spreadsheet on our budget so that we can get a slight idea on the amount of money our parents spend in a month.
our assignment: make a spreadsheet about your family budget. Try making it as realistic as possible. It doesn't necessarily have to be about your family budget. Also say how many people are in that family.

How much do you appreciate the things you have ?
Today in class many of my questions were answered. Questions like why can't i buy lunch every day, or go to the mall with my friends every week and buy things? I would get upset at my parents for not letting me go to the mall as often as i would or buy expensive things. Now i know the reason behind their disapproval, and honestly appreciate their answers now that I'm familiar with how hard it is for them to earn money and support the family. Today, we got familiar with all the basic expenses our parents have to pay for each month, by making a spreadsheet with our expenses and income per month. Income is much less than the expenses, and to make matters worse, every month the government takes a certain percentage of your money so that they can support the poor, and also have money to do things like build roads, schools, houses and more. Depending on the amount of money you make per month, the government takes away some of it. And the more you earn, the more the government will take away from you. Trying to figure out how to run the family budget and keep food on the table is very difficult, but fortunately we can use excel to try figuring out what expenses are best for the family. You can use excel to see what things are needed and what things can wait for a while. Although its difficult work, i appreciate the things my parents do to keep me happy. So the next time i want to ask them for something, ill think twice about it, now that i know how hard it is to keep the family going.

Today in class we spent some time just reviewing what kinds of things are going to be on our test on Wednesday. We also had to hand in our December calendars. Here are just some things that might be on the test on Wednesday.
You need to know everything Mr.Case has taught us about excel.
Like how to merge cells
how to add text
how to do math with excel
when your making a calendar, how you can write things in each box
what print preview does
How to find the sum, average, maximum, minimum, count etc.
and so much more. . .
So dont forget to study !

Excel makes your life easier!
Excel is a great program to use if your lazy or you just like saving time. For example you want to make a calendar to keep track of everything you do in one month or week or year or anything you want. Its very easy, with excel. You open excel and in the first cell write the days of the week or month/year/season or anything else you want to do. Then under each of them put a date so its easier. make your calendar how ever way you want it. But remember if your going to print your calendar, always check the size before you do. Go to Print Preview and look at the size of the sheet, because it might be more than a page. If you want it to be just one page, once your done with print preview, there will be a line on your calendar showing you where the page is going to end, and that's where you need to keep your page so it doesn't become two pages.
You can also do many other things will excel, these are just basics of it.
Thats about it for now.

Life made easy with Excel!
Wonder why they call it exCEL? It’s because excel is a spreadsheet (basically a piece of paper filled with cells that have their own names) you use to do your entire math, and save time. Excel is a great way to calculate your marks, do long tiring calculations in just a blink of an eye. And here's the great part, if you have used excel in the right way, and you make a mistake, you have no worries. The only work you need to do is not worry and just try finding where you made the mistake, fix it and everything else gets fixed, like MAGIC! Impossible right? No way, nothings impossible! All you need to do is follow simple steps. You can do many things like add text, color, different fonts and make the columns and rows as small or as big as you want.
Say you want to find the sum of your entire tests so far. You need to write three pieces of information to help you. You need text string, value and formula. Under text you would write all your subjects. Under value you would write how much each test is out of, and under formula you would write a formula. Let’s say you wrote your one of your subjects in cell B2. (the text string) *If you are unsure where to find the names of the cells, you click on it and at the top of the page on the left hand side, it will say the name. For example: D18.* And you have your test results in columns B3, B4, B5, B6, B7 and B8. (the value) And you want to figure out the total of all your marks. All you need to do is click on the cell you want your total to appear in, write =sum, then open brackets and hold 'CTRL' and click on the numbers you want to add up. It would look something like this: =SUM(B3,B4,B5,B6,B7,B8) This is how you should get your answer. Because if you make a mistake on the way, and you have done your calculations with this formula, you can simply change one number and your answer will automatically change! But if you have written =SUM(B3,B4,B5,B6,B7,B8) on your own without selecting the cells, you are going to have to do that all over again. Especially if there are a lot of cells to find the sum's of.
It’s very easy; you just need to know what you want to figure out. So if it’s an average of something, you click on the cell you want your answer to appear in, write =average, open brackets, select the cells you want, close the brackets and you have your answer! And you didn't need to think at all!
See you soon.

What's the news for this week?
Here's our assignment. We have to get into groups of as many people as we want, but try keeping it small because if there are a lot of people then Mr.Case will mark your assignment harder! You and your group have to come up with a topic for a podcast that is interesting, people would actually like to watch it, and something you can update every week or month. Once you've done that, you need to make a page on the wiki about the podcast your going to do so that everyone would be familiar with your podcast and have a general idea of what its about. The goal is to have the best and most popular podcast which will get you really good marks, and also be interesting and original.
We also talked about open and closed sources. An open source is when someone makes a program and you are able to go into the program, with a password or code, and be able to change the context. But with a closed source, you can not mess around with the program. And you cant see how its made. You can visit http://web.sourceforge.com/. It is a good example of an open source, because anyone can go into sourceforge and change stuff around. Usually sourceforge is a reliable site to download programs from because it is open for everyone to see the program, so if there are any viruses on it, others can see it and remove it or fix it.
When you download a program, you need MP3 and compress your files into smaller zip, when saving.
That's about it for now. :)

Want to watch your favorite shows any time?
Today in class we learned about podcasts. A podcast is a brodcasting or episodic a specific topic, and its updated every week or month. A podcast can be about anything. Maybe on someones opinion about their favorite sport, food, TV show and many more. A podcast focuses on one topic and every week or month that it gets updated, it still talks about the same topic but different ideas about it. Podcasts are over the Internet, so you can access them anytime and download them so that you can watch them anytime and as many times as you want. You can download these podcasts through a program called iTunes.
There is also something called a niche market which is based on specific audiences.
Our assignment is to get into groups of 2-3 and use iTunes to find a podcast that your interested in. Make sure it is something that you can talk about continuously and that you can update every week or month.

Halloweennn !
On Wednesday, we had to make a short but interesting PowerPoint presentation. It had to be sort of like a story, a Halloween story! Scary, creepy funny, or which ever way you want it.
We learned how to hyperlink pages to other pages in our presentation. You simply make a short story, put pictures, not too many words, and make arrows, hyperlink the arrows to other slides, so that when you click on them, they will take you to the slide you chose.
Have fun, and try being creative! Oh and it should be 4-5 pages. Not too long!

Which is your favorite?
Thursday in class, we learned something cool. We learned how to make our own favorites page on the Internet, using PowerPoint. Anyone can do this. You just open a new PowerPoint page, and open an Internet page. Then go to your favorite sites. Find the pictures or symbols that represent the site. For example: Google. Save the picture in a new folder. Every time you go to a site and copy the picture, save it into the same folder. Then, when you open your presentation, go down to the drawing toolbar, click the 'insert picture' and from the folder you saved your images in, choose one. Once your finished inserting all your images, click on one, go up to the menu bar, insert, hyperlink and write in the address you got your image from. For example; if you clicked on the google image, insert hyperlink and in the address bar, type- http://www.google.ca/
Decorate your slide, because its going to be your Internet page. So now, every time you open Internet explorer, the page you created will be there, and you simply click on the image of the site you want to visit and your good to go!
But the only way that will work is if you save your work properly. First save it as a PowerPoint presentation, then save it as an HTML. Then when you open Internet, you can open your page easily.
See ya.

How much do you know about powepoint?
The time has come for everyone to show their knowledge of Power Point. Were having a test on Monday on everything we've learned about PowerPoint so far. But the catch is that we've been learning new things about PowerPoint, like what are some features of each of the toolbars, how you can add animations, view slide shows and stuff like that. This is also a good opportunity to get familiar with all the features of powerpoint that we hadnt discovered before. To prepare for this test, the only thing we can do is just go to powepoint and play around with everything. Find out how things work.
Thats its for now.
May the POWER of POINT be with you! :P

Branding; spread the word.
Barabababa I'm lovin it!
McDonald is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear that slogan, right?
Well that's called branding. It's when a company comes up with a catchy phrase or song to represent their product or company. You could call this a kind of symbol. They use that symbol so that when ever you see or hear it, instantly you'll think of their company. We have a new assignment, and that is to think of a company or brand we like the most and make a two minute PowerPoint presentation on it. In our presentation, we have to mention things like: what the company does to get you thinking of their products, what phrases or slogans do they use to capture your attention and why you like the product you chose.
This is a PowerPoint presentation, so don't forget your PowerPoint rules!

Not what it seems.
Today in class, we learned more about how PowerPoint works and all the different functions of it. I always thought that using PowerPoint was easy and not very interesting, because all I did with it was make slides and some pictures and colours and done. But today, I learned that there is more to PowerPoint than I, or probably anyone else, knew about. Who knew PowerPoint could do so much? I sure didn't. =]
Until next time,

Good news for some people, bad news for most.
Hey. First of all, we got our tests back today. Most of us did pretty well for our first test. I know I could surely improve for the next test.
Secondly, we started talking about a new law that is going to be in action in Canada this year. Here it is. If you download any music or movies, you can go to jail or be sued!!
Now you might ask how? Okay good question. That was exactly what I was thinking when I heard about it. Well the law right now is that you can download but not upload. But here's a problem we face when were downloading. When you download something, you are also uploading at the same time without having any knowledge about doing so!
Ill tell you more about it once i learn more facts on it.
But for now, my advice to you is. . . download music and movies while you can, because as soon as the law comes into place, your going to have to pay for it, or WORSE, might go to jail !!

Do you want to teach the audience something, or put them to sleep?
Here's another article i read on how PowerPoint presentations just bore the audience out of their minds and end up not teaching them anything, by Ellen Neuborne.
We all know how horrible it is sitting through a power point presentation not knowing what the presenter is stalking about. Your trying to focus on the speaker but the flashing lights and sounds just distract you and you cant help but get distracted and end up clueless!
In this article, she talks about what rules you should follow in order to have a good PowerPoint presentation. She talks about the mistakes people make when creating a PowerPoint.
-They create messy and hard to read screens. They put all sorts of information on it, when they should really only have key words. In many cases, presenters use their PowerPoint like a script, and they just read right off of it.
-The message they are trying to point out isn't clear. The information you put on your PowerPoint should be relevant to what you are speaking about. Mistakes that are made is that people put information on their PowerPoint, but it has nothing to do with their topic or what they are discussing.
-Don't have images and sounds that distract the audience. One horrible way to sit at a presentation is that if you have something on the screen that is distracting you from the speaker. Try not to put too much flashing lights, sounds and images on your presentation. It should be limited.
-Always pre-check your presentation and device, so that it works. Many people don't pay attention to the fact that they should test the computer, their presentation, projector and anything else they need to present. ''What good is a presentation if it can't be projected?''
Make sure you have spare prints of your presentation ahead of time so that if something happens, you wont be left there wishing you had checked the computer first.
Think about it. Would you rather be bored out of your mind during a presentation or entertained and at the same time educated by it?
So the next time you want to make a presentation, make sure you review the rules, so that you could stand out and impress everyone.
That's all for now,
Peggy

Death by Powerpoint!
Today in class, we had to read an article about how many people mess up their PowerPoint presentations. Of course, most people know how to make a PowerPoint presentation, but do they know how to make a proper one?
Well here's an article I read today, by Andrew Wahl. This article explains about how many people make a presentation but while they are presenting, they bore the audience to death. There are many reasons as to why this happens.
The main point is that when teachers teach you how to make a power point presentation, they just teach you the basics. They don't teach you how to actually present one successfully.
Many people don't follow some rules that apply to presenting well.
It is important that you know how to present in a way that doesn't bore the audience and that they can get something affective out of it.
Now a days, many people and companies and speeches etc, ask you to do a PowerPoint presentation when you are giving information out. PowerPoint is the second most used communication transfer.
In this article we just read, it gives you a few general rules that help you present better, without putting your audience to sleep. The funny thing is that these are the same rules that Mr.Case taught us!
Here's a small review.
-The presenter is the most important part of your presentation.
-Don't make your PowerPoint too long.
-Don't use any pictures or sounds that would distract the audience.
-Always use jot notes.
-Make sure your on the same page as your slide or else you'll look foolish.
-Never look at your PowerPoint when presenting; either use cue cards or look at the little computer.
- Your PowerPoint shouldn't assist you.
One more important things you need to know is the ''B'' key. This is the key that blacks out the screen.
Those were just a few rules you can use to help you in presenting. But of course I had already talked about them, but there is never anything wrong with reviewing them!

TEST ALERT !!
Here's our first test of the year. We have a test on Monday on everything we've learned since the beginning of the year. The things that are going to be on the test are things like the three rules of PowerPoint, all the computer components, how to do a proper PowerPoint presentation and many more.
I'm busy studying on the weekend and hopefully ill do well on the test !
Good luck to you all ! ;)

Seeing is believing.
Ever looked at a computer beyond the image that we can see ?
Well today, I got a good look at what really makes a computer function the way we want it to.
Of course everyone knows that there isn't just a case, screen, mouse, keyboard and speakers to a computer, but do they really know what fascinating things lie behind them ?
To really think of it scientifically, a computer doesn't know anything unless we give it information and instructions. What carries out the instructions and process information are the many different computer parts that are built into the computer itself. Every computer part has its own function, and if each carry out what they are supposed to do, you've got yourself a proper working computer!
Here are just a few of the many computer parts built into the computer:
Motherboard
- everything is connected to the motherboard.
- it controls everything.
- it uses BIOS (basic input output system).
- BIOS wakes the computer up; it stores information so that when you turn on the computer, it can tell the computer what to do.
Video card
-turns binary data from the CPU (central processing unit)
- it takes some of the work that the CPU has to do and does it itself so that the CPU has time to do other things.
- Expensive video cards are coated in gold, but cheaper ones are coated in silver.
Hard drive & memory. (RAM)
- Hard drive is a long term memory.
- It connects to motherboard and power supply.
- It has a lot more hard drive space than RAM
- RAM is what you use right now.
- Every time you open up a program, it uses RAM.
- RAM is like a big table that you use to put and view information.
- USB keys maintain information even if you turn off your computer.
CPU/processor.
- CPU stands for central processing unit.
- It does all the work inside of a computer.
- It is the brain of the computer.
- Its the size of your pinkie.
-There is a fan on top of the CPU that help keep the computer and its parts cool.
- CPU is covered in ceramic which dissipates heat.
Modem.
- Takes binary data and turns it into sound.
- Transfers sound to phone line.
CD-ROM.
- Stores information on the data pads.
- There is a DOT , a laser, that reads your CD.
- While your CD is spinning, the laser moves up from the center of the CD to read it.
- It uses a laser to read bumps and pits.
Mouse.
- There are three types of mouse.
A laser mouse, that uses the reflection of light to send signals to the computer.
A LED mouse, that does the same thing as a laser mouse.
And an optical mouse, that uses two balls for navigation. A fron ball and a back one.
Keyboard.
- Its an input device.
- It is connected to the computer with a cable.
- The cable sends signals to and from the keyboard.
Remember! When you are holding a component, always hold it using the sides and never the top and bottom because there might be some electricity still running.
Until next time,
Peggy

It's such a big relief.
I'm so glad the presentations are over! And hopefully I've done a good job presenting.
Even though we couldn't get to listen to everyone in the class present, because we ran out of time, I still learned a lot on Thursday, about different kinds of computer parts. I learned about RAM, motherboard, LCD monitor and graphics/video cards. There wasn't enough time for me to write down everything, but I managed to learn a lot of information on each computer part.
For our first PowerPoint presentation, I think that everyone did a good job and we all learned many interesting facts.
Hopefully, I'll get better at presenting, and learn from my mistakes so that I can do a better job of it the next time we have to do a presentation.
So long!

If you want to do it, do it RIGHT !
We just finished learning about how to make a proper PowerPoint presentation. We have to turn our posters into a PowerPoint presentation and we only get this class and the next class to work on it. There are many rules to making a good presentation.
- The most important part of your presentation is the presenter.
- Don't read your information off your PowerPoint because you never know what could happen to the presentation. For example: your computer can break or have technical problems or your screen. So your PowerPoint should be assisting you not the other way around.
- Always face your audience when your presenting.
- Don't use flashing lights, moving pictures or text, or sounds because it takes the focus off you and the audience can't focus on what your saying and they'll get distracted.
-Instead of looking at your PowerPoint, use the small computer that's in front of you.
- Always start out with ''Hi my name is ... and today I'd like to talk to you about ... ''
- Its more professional if your tittle on the tittle page is the same font as your sub tittles for starting a new page.
- The minimum font size should be 24. Its better if you use bigger size font so that your audience can see more clearly.
- Always use important jot notes and never write paragraphs.
- Always site where you got your pictures and information from, properly.
- Use clip art for your pictures.
So those are some factors you should consider when you are doing a PowerPoint presentation. And hopefully they will help.

How old do you think you really are ?
On Thursday we learned about Binary codes and how we can switch numbers into binary. At first it was a little confusing but when Mr.Case (my teacher) started giving us examples and making us solve them, we all began to grasp the context. Before we want to turn numbers into a binary code, we have to make a value chart and so that we can identify binary numbers faster. It starts out with 1 times 2, two times two, and you keep multiplying each number by two. The binary numbers are: 2, 4, 8,16, 32 etc.
In binary, base 2 numbers are used instead of base 10. Base 10 is used for normal numbers like: 1, 10, 100, 1000 etc. Base2 numbers consist of only ones and zeros.
See you later!

Not much time left..
Deadlines are here! Today was our last day to finish typing out our project and finishing the poster. We have business tomorrow, which means we are going to start presenting.
I have learned so much from this project and a lot about the computer part I had to research about. I learned the main function of a graphics/video card. A graphics card displays images on a screen. It turns binary data from the CPU and turns it into an image that you can see.
The four main components of a graphics card are:
-A motherboard that is used for connecting data and power.
-A processor which is used to deal with each pixel on the screen.
-A memory to store pictures.
-A monitor to display the final images.
So I put this information plus some more, and some pictures, all together and created a poster that I have to present in front of the class tomorrow to teach them a little about how graphics/video cards work.
Hopefully everyone will learn something new tomorrow!
Catch you later .

First project.
It's not even the second week of school and we already have our first project. But I think it's and interesting and helpful project so I'm looking forwards to learning interesting fact about computer hardware. We all get into groups of two or three and each group gets a specific computer part to research about. Even though we are in groups, we each get marked individually and have to make our own poster. My group has to research about graphic cards/video cards. We are supposed to get information from the site : http://www.howstuffworks.com/ and any other sites that we think might be useful for finding information.
Today in class we got time to take down jot notes on our topic and decide how we were going to do our posters. We have to work quickly and efficiently, though, because we only have until Wednesday to finish them and we present on Thursday!
Best of luck,
Peggy

Just the beginning.
After a long summer, I'm finally back at school and ready to work work work, and learn new things.
I haven't really been interested in writing or reading blogs, but because I took business this year, we're learning to write blogs which I find pretty interesting. Today was my second business class since school started. We didn't do much on the first day, just got a general idea of what were going to be doing this year, but today we all learned to create our own blogs and posts.
Its only the beginning of my year and course but I'm looking forwards to a great school year and hopefully learn a lot of things.
See you around.
